John Smith is not your average teenager. He regularly moves from small town to small town. He changes his name and identity. He does not put down roots. He cannot tell anyone who or what he really is. If he stops moving those who hunt him will find and kill him. But you can't run forever. So when he stops in Paradise, Ohio, John decides to try and settle down. To fit in. And for the first time he makes some real friends. People he cares about - and who care about him. Never in John's short life has there been space for friendship, or even love. But it's just a matter of time before John's secret is revealed. He was once one of nine. Three of them have been killed. John is Number Four. He knows that he is next ...

I finally got a copy of I Am Number Four. It was well worth the wait. It begins with the death of number three. Then we meet Number four, whose new name is John Smith. He has had to move to Paradise, Ohio with his guardian Henri. Henri has been with John for ten years and is more like a father to him. Henri also has to teach John about his Legacies, which are powers that will appear to help him in his fight against the peoples who destroyed his home planet. John and Henri are always ready to leave a moments notice. John has always stuck to the fringes when in school, never making any real friends. I really liked John's strength, courage and loyalty. He is also confident, but never in an arrogant, superior way. He just knows who he is. He never complains, even though he has such a huge responsibility. He literally has the weight of his world on his shoulders. Luckily there are six others to help share the burden. When he starts school he meets Sarah and Sam. Sarah is the most beautiful girl he's ever seen. He gets nervous around her, and it's great to see him get a bit flustered. Sarah is really nice and caring, and is the only one who makes him welcome at first. They become friends almost immediately. Then he meets Sam whose is obsessed with aliens. Sam seems like your typical nerd, but he has hidden strengths, and is ready and willing to fight for what he believes in. When Sam and Sarah learn what John is, they are shocked, but quickly get over it seeing John for who he is, their friend and someone who has protected and cares for them. Mark is the jock and school bully. When he see's Sarah take an interest in John he begins to bully him. John stands up for himself and Sam, which comes as a bit of a shock to Mark and his teammates. Henri is not happy with the goings on at school and Johns increasing feelings for Sarah. He explains the consequences of what can happen, but never pushes the issue to far. He trusts John's judgement. Henri loves John like a son, and is very proud of who he has become. He is always on guard, knowing he has to protect John at all costs. When they are discovered, and their enemies attack, they find that their friends, even enemy, are willing to help them fight. The ending is full of action, and great sadness. I even cried actual tears. I was surprised at Marks involvement, and it redeems his earlier actions. I enjoyed I Am Number Four immensely. It's written from John's point of view, and I liked the authors style of writing. I can't wait to see what they do with the movie, and what happens in the next book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fantastic story. 5/5

I Am Number Four in four words: breathless, page turning thrills.
